It's a purple problem- rampant in the red states as well as the blue. Conservatives turn to one flawed and morally questionable man to restore the cultural supremacy of White Anglo-Saxon Protestant values while their spouses and children, even they themselves, prove living microcosms of their own definitions of modern moral depravity. Meanwhile, bleeding heart liberals push government to provide a better systemic safety net for the so-called
underprivileged, but few step up to provide support where government agencies and policies so often fail. Too anemic for physical labor- I suppose.
In a free country such as ours- where individuals are empowered to lead the life of their choosing and human potential is largely unfettered by oppression- integrity is the most efficient path toward solving our nation's problems. In fact, if politics were actually a true reflection of our values, we wouldn't need it so much. If we exhibited self-restraint, tougher regulation would be unnecessary. If we lived our conscience we wouldn't rely on voting our conscience to have others act on our behalf.
In stead, politics- in our flawed human employment of the idea- is the method of sharing and indeed shifting blame and responsibility for our collection of individual problems. It is the vehicle by which we transport our personal failures to the distant and impersonal macro-arenas of global and national events.
Rearing our children and conducting ourselves according to the ethics of our understanding is only marginally influenced by external forces such as The Media/censorship, progressive legislation, or multi-culturalism. The government can outlaw sin, but it cannot save any one's soul. Not even in the most barbaric corners of Afghanistan or colonial America has a legal system ever succeeded in that. Similarly, the government can hand out blocks of cheese, but it can't care for your neighbors. These collective ailments require individual human responses as a primary, not secondary, prescriptions.
We are foolish to point fingers at the government for its immorality and greed without feeling the scrape of four nails against our own chests. This is OUR government. It will never achieve where we fail. It will only achieve what we have the strength of character and will to stop bitching and do.
It's human nature that, with personal fallibility as our only certainty, we never begin to build a faith in ourselves. In stead we achieve all things through Christ who strengthens us or through chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo to a scroll-in-a-box or some other Godless ritual that denies the singular beauty of our design- that we are inherently empowered. Judeo-Christian scripture says "made in God's image", sharing in his consciousness and creativity to manipulate and respond wisely to our environment. Buddhism teaches that the Buddha nature is always abiding within the spirit of all things and is routinely summoned and realized in the moment of our choosing. The great tragedy is that no matter how many times we make miracles within our lives and in the lives of each other, we give all the credit to some divine no one else nowhere else- thankful too late for gifts given in birth.

| Founding father's disapproving look |
This religious fallacy naturally extends into our politics. Although we've discovered, during the enlightenment, the power of reason and experience as valid pathways to truth as oppose to the old reliance on revelation and founded a nation on that conviction, the remnants of pre-enlightenment persists in the form of self-doubt, devaluing our personal problem solving skills and elevating a leader who may himself profess a direct connection to a divine omniscience.
It's sad that the demands of the people require politicians, Obama and his opponents in particular, to play into this very psychosis. Ironically, even in a democracy no one can get elected without promising to single-handedly change a political system which requires concerting actions by 3 branches of government and the consent of millions to accomplish anything. Why do we demand that government for the people by the people be led by a supposed autocrat?
Not even Jesus Christ himself could tolerate more than 3 years of legions stalking him around when they have good works undone and turning to him about every little thing after he already gave them the basic principles and hoped they could employ deductive reasoning to sort out the rest. It's doubtful that the disciples would have spread the Gospel half way around the world if Jesus had stuck around and let them sniff his garment hem all damn day. Once his purpose of inspiration was served, he became a distraction as leaders have become today. When are we going to get realistic about our political expectations and begin to help our leaders and ourselves accomplish our shared goals rather than back-seat drive like grandma with cataracts?
Even our elected representatives pass the buck, harping about a failure of leadership rather than owning their own failures. Do you remember Republicans whining that they couldn't compromise with the Democrats because the president used divisive language during an address? It happened. At every level of society we differ responsibility. So where can it start except on the ground, with you and me, so no one gets a pass.
This coming election should not be one for "anybody but Obama" in protest of his broken promises. Instead, it should be about the reality that no one including Obama can deliver what all of our politicians offer: success without work, gain without sacrifice- the pill that makes you lose pounds of body fat without diet or exercise. Be real.
Happy President's Day!!!
